Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a little girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. She joined at the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor fit there. Ford later applied for a spot for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. She made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. The regular theatre work she performed has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her set in 1996, soon gained her admiration.
